Scheduling and Fields Update
A frequently asked question of FWSA Board members is: Why do we play most of our games during the week at night when we were originally a Saturday league?
The answer has three components: the popularity of soccer; the influx of new residents in the county; and the competition for rectangular fields by different sports leagues.
The leagues that vie for county fields vary from soccer to football, from lacrosse to cricket. Around 2004, there was a 117 field deficit in Fairfax County, which means: for the amount of registered teams and leagues requesting field space to practice and play games, the county actually needed an additional 117 fields to appease demand.
The way fields are distributed among the county's registered rectangular field users, space is first given to youth leagues when children are most able to practice and play games: until 8 pm on weekdays, and on weekends.
Add inclement weather and extreme overuse of natural turf fields, and you get the sense of frustration on the part of sports leagues, county schedulers, and Park Authority grounds keepers. We needed solutions to our field deficit and public demand for outdoor fields to play on.
Thus, the artificial turf field movement was born in Fairfax County. Through Park Authority bond referendums, and the investment of some sports groups, the county started building arti-turf fields to maximize playing time (you can play on them in the rain--anything but snow and ice),and minimize maintenance. We now have nearly a dozen arti-turf fields online in the county, and that number will continue to grow by a couple of new fields a year with each new bond that is voted on by county residents.
All this by way of saying, yes, FWSA used to be a Saturday league. But our days as a weekend league are mostly over, as youth leagues are scheduled for those times.
